Speaker: John McAnulty (Socialist Democracy)

The outcome of the 2024 Irish general election was a shattering blow to the prospects of a Left government in Ireland. Support for Sinn Fein fell dramatically while the socialist left in the Dail was reduced to a tiny rump. Instead of the Left in power we have one of the most right-wing governments in the history of the state being propped up by a grouping of the most toxic TDs in the Dail.

This should be cause for reflection and reassessment. Indications (such as the recent statement from the Red Network on the future of PbP) that this is starting are to be welcomed. This discussion is intended to make a contribution to that process. It addresses a number of critical issues. These include; the ideological underpinnings of the Left government perspective; the feasibility of advancing pro worker reforms in Ireland; and more broadly the current state of the labour movement and the political Left.
