Army being put on standby to help out at Dublin Airport

Ciara Doherty is joined in studio by Bauer Media’s Political Correspondent Seán Defoe, Labour Party’s Jed Nash TD and Fine Gael’s Emer Higgins TD to discuss the army being put on standby to help out at Dublin Airport.

Members of the Irish Defence Forces are to begin training so they can stand in for security personnel at Dublin Airport in the event of a Covid-19 surge.

Jed Nash TD points out that the DAA let hundred of staff go in a ‘voluntary redundancy scheme’ in an effort to ‘rightsize’ the airport.

Now, they are issuing a contingency plan including Ireland’s defence force to help them with high numbers of the public travelling.

Emer Higgins TD believes this is just a precautionary plan, that staff redundancy has been found in airports across the globe due to Covid 19.

The Army union are not happy they are being called in to help with Dublin Airport security, stating “we are not here to solve private companies’ HR problems.”
