In search of a deal with a visit to three Dublin markets at Blackrock, Dún Laoghaire and Mother Redcap’s.

′Head to Toe’ presenter Pat O’Mahony is given a tour of three Dublin markets by former ‘Jo-Maxi’ reporter and singer with the band A House, Susan Kavanagh, a self confessed market fanatic.

Markets combine a love of bargain hunting while also allowing for individuality in the way we dress. For Susan, whiling away time looking at colourful market stalls is a good day out, and far more enjoyable than going to the shops on the high street.

Pat and Susan’s first port of call is Mother Redcap’s indoor market near Christ Church, which harks back to an earlier era, and reminds Pat of the Dandelion Market. Here they browse the vast range of stalls selling everything from antiques, jewellery, shoes and curtains to handmade knitted garments.

The great thing about these is that they cost twice as much if you were to get them in the shops.

They next visit Blackrock Market in County Dublin. This is mainly an open air market but some of the stalls are in dedicated shop spaces. Here, Susan finds bargain designer pieces by Escada and Paul Costello. Pat also notes the CDs and singles are cheaper than in shops.

Their final stop is Dún Laoghaire market, also outdoors, but one that also has food stalls and activities for children. Here Pat and Susan visit Harlequin vintage clothing and Susan finds a dress that suits her style but more importantly, Pat’s budget.

For newcomers to markets, Pat gives the following advice,

Be patient, some days you’ll undoubtedly find nothing you like, then one day, bingo, just don’t be too surprised if someone beats you to it.

This episode of ‘Head to Toe’ was broadcast on 22 September 1992. The presenter is Pat O’Mahony.
