Spectacular Irish Landscapes
Ireland, Irish Éire, country of western Europe occupying five-sixths of the westernmost major island of the British Isles. Ireland is known for its wide expanses of lush, green fields. In fact, its nickname is the Emerald Isle. The geography of Ireland comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. Its lush vegetation is a product of its mild but changeable climate which is free of extremes in temperature. Ireland’s climate is classified as western maritime. The predominant influence is the Atlantic Ocean, which is no more than 70 miles from any inland location. The mild southwesterly winds and warm waters of the North Atlantic Current contribute to the moderate quality of the climate.
