Galway Pub to Defy Smoking Ban, Ireland 2004 February 23, 2025 Admin Old Ireland </p> <h2>Galway Pub to Defy Smoking Ban, Ireland 2004</h2> <p> A Galway publican allows customers to smoke in his bar in a challenge to the government smoking ban .</p> <p>Customers in Fibber Magee’s bar on Eyre Square were puffing away freely this evening, even though the smoking ban was introduced three months ago.</p> <p>Manager and co-owner Ciaran Levanzin says the decision to allow patrons to smoke indoors was made following a serious drop in trade in the pub sector.</p> <p>We’re going out of business.</p> <p>Publicans who breach the smoking ban can be fined €3,000. Ciaran Levanzin says he is aware that he is breaking the law, but feels that he must take a stand on the issue,</p> <p>Some Polish tourists on holidays in Galway were pleased to find a hostelry where they could smoke indoors.</p> <p>An RTÉ News report broadcast on 6 July 2004.
