Garda Overreach Threatening Irish Democracy – A Deeply Alarming Development
Last Friday, 14 February 2025, X informed 10 of its Irish users that it had successfully opposed court orders granting government access to their data, using Section 63 Criminal Justice Act 1994, as amended. In some of these cases, X went to court to ensure that it was not unlawfully forced to disclose user data. X remains committed to protecting its users’ privacy and freedom of expression from government overreach. Ireland’s leading independent Media Outlet, Gript Media was one of the 10, as was our own Jana Lunden along with 8 others.
