IRELAND Makes Historic Move with Radar System for Ukraine
Ireland, historically neutral and barely armed, is now sending Giraffe Mark IV radar systems to Ukraine. If that isn’t a sign that Russia is losing friends fast, I don’t know what is. Ireland Steps Up: What’s in This Aid Package? Giraffe Mark IV Air Defense Radars—Developed by Sweden’s Saab, these radar systems provide 50 km early warning coverage, tracking up to 20 targets at once. Mounted on BV206 tracked vehicles—Meaning Ukraine can deploy them in rugged, off-road conditions. Full integration with Ukraine’s air defense network—They’ll link up with systems like NASAMS, IRIS-T, and Patriot for better drone and missile interception. Irish training teams in Ukraine—Ireland is also sending personnel to help train Ukrainian forces on the radars. That’s right—Irish boots on the ground. While Ireland won’t send missile launchers due to its policy of only providing non-lethal aid, these radars will still play a critical role in Ukraine’s layered air defense. Why This Is a Huge Shift for Ireland Ireland sat out World War II and has maintained a strict policy of neutrality for decades. This isn’t just symbolic—Ireland is leaving a major gap in its own air defense to make this happen, planning to buy more advanced radars later. Sweden’s Role in Ukraine’s Air Defense At the same time, Sweden just committed an additional $113 million in air defense systems: ✅ RBS 70 NG: A portable, laser-guided missile system with a 9 km range, capable of taking down drones and low-flying aircraft. ✅ Tridon Mk2: A mobile Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft gun system with a 12 km effective range, designed to handle Russian missile and drone threats. Sweden has already sent over $1.2 billion in military aid to Ukraine, showing that Europe is stepping up as U.S. support wavers. The Belfast Connection: Northern Ireland’s Missile Factory Oh, and in case you thought I forgot about Northern Ireland—Belfast’s Thales missile factory just secured a contract to deliver 5,000 lightweight multirole missiles (LMMs) to Ukraine. These Martlet missiles are: 🚀 13 kg lightweight guided missiles—small but deadly. 🚀 Designed for drones, helicopters, and fast-moving targets. 🚀 Already combat-tested in Ukraine. This £1.6 billion deal will expand production, create 200 new jobs in Belfast, and keep Ukraine’s anti-air capabilities stocked for years. While this won’t suddenly turn the tide of war, it proves Russia’s aggression has backfired spectacularly.
