To put that into perspective, nearly seven thousand asylum applications have been filed so far in twenty twenty-three—a sharp eighty-seven percent rise compared to last year.A significant number of these asylum seekers, about ninety-one percent, are believed to have crossed the border from Northern Ireland.
Many of them come from EU countries, seeking refuge not from danger, but rather for the benefits Ireland offers.
