More than one million electricity and gas customers to escape immediate price hike

More than a million electricity and gas customers with Electric Ireland look set to escape any immediate price increases despite rivals hiking costs.

Paul Stapleton, the chief financial officer of the ESB, which owns Electric Ireland, said that wholesale gas prices – which have a huge bearing on consumer energy costs – have been trending downwards in recent weeks.

“If that trend continues, then that will be positive for customers and positive for retail prices over time,” he said.
