The End to The Round of Drinks? Ireland 1975

A Call is made to end the social convention of purchasing rounds of alcohol and prevent binge drinking.

Buying rounds in Irish pubs is a social norm that the organisation Íobairt hopes to end. Íobairt launched a campaign at a pub in Baltimore that uses a simple badge.

The design indicates sacrifice and breaking the vicious circle by the power of God while allowing the man who likes to drink to enjoy doing so.

Father Timothy O’Donovan a local priest and a pioneer is hopeful that the campaign will be successful. He was urged to do something about the practice having witnessed the unhappiness binge drinking has caused in the home and the accidents and possible death that have come about. Publicans have largely reacted favourably to the campaign. There is a pressure to drink more that comes from round buying among people in pubs.

The forcing of people to take drink that they don’t need.

Father Timothy O’Donovan believes that there is a larger role for religion and God to play in the modern world.
