Whiddy Island Crude Oil Storage Facility
January 1979 – during a routine unloading of a visiting oil tanker, an accident caused a fire and huge explosion, destroying the visiting tanker and posing a real danger to the Whiddy Island crude oil storage facility. Mired in controversy, the inquiry into what happened left many people feeling dissatisfied…. It remains Ireland’s deadliest maritime tragedy.
