‘We played better against Belgium and Switzerland’ – John O’Shea gives verdict on Ireland

John O’Shea hailed the ability of his Ireland side to “dig deep” and carve out a win at home to a classy Hungary side who lost their 14-game unbeaten run in Dublin against O’Shea’s outfit.
But O’Shea has backed off from claiming that the win over Hungary adds to his claims to land the manager’s job on a long-term basis.

Asked if the win was evidence that he should be given the post on a permanent basis he said: “It’s evidence that we are winning games again which is hugely important at home, we want to qualify and win games, that’s the foundation for qualifying, against a team on that run.”

Ireland had drawn both games in March – and he contended hat the team played better in those matches than in the win over Hungary but he was pleased to end the wait for a win for Ireland over a team not called Gibraltar.
