‘When we bought the house more than a decade ago, it didn’t even have a kitchen’ – Declan Groves
They say necessity is the mother of all invention, an idiom that rings true when it comes to renovating a home to meet your needs. For Alan McArthur and his husband, Declan Groves, their 1950s home, while having great (if worn-out) bones, needed a new lease of life, not to mention a kitchen.
“We bought the house 10 years ago; it didn’t even have a kitchen at the time, just a small pantry with an open fireplace.” It did, however, have a 140ft garden, giving them plenty of options for expansion, and beautiful Victorian features, including picture rails, generous ceilings and decorative architraves.
“We knew the bones were good and it was the potential that drew us in, and the huge garden meant we had room to play.”
